21st Century Classrooms
Elementary K-5
The world has changed, we live in an increasingly global society, and education must change as well. We have an obligation to prepare children for their world. Our district needs the technology in every classroom to ensure each child is exposed to a 21st Century learning environment. Recent studies conclude that technology rich instruction results in significant increases in student achievement. Technology enhances instruction opportunities and engages students by creating an authentic, experiential learning environment. We want to equip our teachers and students with the technology tools necessary to transform the future of education. This program will underwrite the cost of developing 21st Century Classrooms across the district by ensuring every classroom is equipped with a sound system (to be used with computer projectors and interactive white board purchased by the district), document reader, printer, individual student response devices, a minimum of four wireless laptop computers in each elementary classroom to serve as a learning station, and one mobile laptop computer cart for every two classrooms to ensure that teachers can design technology rich lessons and have computers reasonably available for use by the students.
Five Year Cost Estimate:
- 1 Elementary Classroom: $ 6,000
- 1 Laptop Cart: $ 30,000
- 50 Elementary Classrooms: $ 300,000
- 20 Laptop Carts: $ 600,000
Secondary 6-12
This initiative will include the cost of developing 21st Century Classrooms by ensuring every secondary classroom is equipped with a sound system (to be used with computer projectors and interactive white board purchased by the district), document reader, printer, individual student response devices, and a one-to-one laptop computer solution for every student at the middle school beginning with the 2011-2012 school year. (Note: a one-to-one laptop program is currently being planned for the high school through the district technology fund to begin as early as 2010-2011.)

- 1 Secondary Classroom: $ 2,000
- 80 Secondary Classrooms: $ 160,000
- Middle School 1-to-1: $ 500,000
