Lewisburg Students Gain Global Perspective at Model UN Conference

Last Updated 2/12/2026

Last November, 24 students from the Lewisburg Area High School (LAHS) attended the Gannon University Model United Nations (UN) Conference in Erie, PA. Funding from The Green Dragon Foundation through the PA Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program made this experience possible.

The LAHS Model UN Club is a very popular extracurricular activity enjoyed by approximately 45 students ranging from freshmen to seniors. Participation in Model UN enables students to deepen their understanding of the conflicts and crises that currently shape the world. Students also gain skills in critical thinking, public speaking and teamwork. The group usually participates in the Ivy League Model UN Conference each January, however due to registration limits, not all interested students can attend. The Gannon conference provided younger students with the opportunity to participate, with many experiencing Model UN for the first time.

Social studies teacher and club advisor Dakota Gessner stated, “Our students benefited immensely from this gift, as they were able to hone their public speaking, critical thinking, and analytical thinking skills in a simulated Model UN Conference. Representing the country of France, our students debated with students from across the country on issues ranging from how to properly monitor atomic weapons to guidelines regulating outer space. Students were able to listen to a diversity of viewpoints, and crafted authentic resolutions to address global issues they will confront upon graduation from high school.”

Sophomore Elliana Rupert expressed her gratitude saying, "Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity! I was able to learn so much and step out of my comfort zone to become a co-sponsor. This is an amazing achievement for my first time and it was because of the generous donation. I will continue to do Model UN for the rest of my high school career."

The Green Dragon Foundation strives to enhance the Lewisburg student experience by providing funding for innovative programs in the classroom and beyond. GDF Executive Director Ann Glock stated, “We hope that experiences like Model UN inspire students to discover interests and passions that may ultimately shape their future career paths.” Individuals or businesses wishing to help provide engaging opportunities in academics, the arts and athletics can contact the Foundation at [email protected] or 570-522-8433.
